Hot Springs
Gunma Prefecture truly abounds in a great many hot springs. Led by such famous areas as Kusatsu, Minakami and Ikaho, they offer a genuine warm Japanese welcome to travelers. The waters are of great variety and effectiveness, and the spas are in harmony with their surroundings and in any area they gently ease the souls and bodies of the traveler.

Kusatsu Town is an international resort area on a plateau at an elevation of 1,200m. More hot water is produced here than in any other place in Japan. The superior water quality is said to cure any malady except perhaps that of "love-sickness". But give it a try.

This is a famous spa town with 360 stone steps on the northeastern slope of Mt. Haruna. The ancient baths and waters are mentioned in the Manyo-shu, Japan's oldest anthology of poems from 9th century, and in the Kokinwaka-shu, an anthology of waka poems from the 10th century. The waters are touted to be blessed and especially beneficial to children.

Enclosed by mountains, this major spa village is truly representative of Gunma Prefecture. Here one can enjoy the bright and open hot spring streets and alleys, the beauty of Tanigawadake and the waters of the Tone River gorge that flow through the town center.

This is a spa with a legend that says its waters are effective for 40,000 kinds of disorders. Boasting abundant hot water, it was the first hot spring designated as a people's health preservation spa.

This is a spa located on the shores of Lake Akaya, surrounded by beautiful scenery, backing on to the Tanigawa monutain range. In addition, Lake Akaya offers recreational activities such as fishing and boating.

The streets along both banks of the Katashina Gorge are reminiscent of traditional hot spring scenes from long ago. The famous Fukiwari Falls are located nearby.

In the vicinity of the Usui River, this hot spring area offers a view of Mt. Myogi, one of Japan's three great sights, to the west. Nearby is the Akima plum forest, the largest of its kind near Tokyo.

This is a hot spring area known for its greenery, historical ruins and natural hot water. Nearby tourist attractions, such as the Snake Center are not to be missed.

This hot spring village is located at an elevation of 1,800m, near the Nagano Prefecture border. Surrounded by the vastness of nature, it offers a soothing atmosphere. Centering on Mt. Shirane, there are magnificent views of mountain ranges in every direction.
