Why Gunma?

Gunma is just an hour from Tokyo by the Shinkansen (bullet train). It is on the superb and beautiful natural areas of Oze, Mt. Tanigawadake, Mt. Akagi and others where visitors find peace of mind and delight in the perennial snow and the new growth in the spring and the glorious colors of autumn.
Within the prefecture there is a great variety of hot springs such as Kusatsu, Minakami and Ikaho with an abundance of mineral laced waters. Gunma is one of the most popular prefectures for hot springs in Japan.
In these mountains and their nearby plateaus, golf, skiing, rafting and other outdoor activities can be enjoyed to the fullest throughout the year.

Hot springs

Nestled in an arc of majestic mountains, Gunma is famous for its “onsen” or hot springs. Both indoor and outdoor onsen contain naturally, geothermally-heated spring water. Because of its rich mineral content, onsen water is believed to have healing powers. Every onsen has a different mineral composition so that each visit is a unique, refreshing experience.

Daruma dolls, or dharma dolls, are modeled after the first Zen monk. When coloring in the left eye of a daruma doll, the owner makes a wish. Upon fulfillment of the wish, the owner colors in the right eye of the daruma doll. Because of their round shape, when knocked over, daruma dolls will usually rebound into an upright position. This has led to daruma dolls becoming a symbol of optimism and persistence in the face of adversity.
